I Always Wanted to go to Fiji…:)

April18

This is challenge 6– What I know about Fiji is that it’s a beautiful tropical island. It started out with me and my friend, Becca, just wanting to go to Fiji just because it sounded cool, but after I look up a couple pictures I actually really want to go there. My favorite season is Summer because of the warm weather, so that’s another reason I want to go to Fiji, for the warm weather.

The Colorful World Of Crayons☺

March10

Crayola Crayons

Everyone has a favorite color of crayon from Cotton Candy Pink to Blizzard Blue, but does anyone know how many colors there are, who invented them or how they are made? Since 1903 they have become one of the most recognized brands in the consumer markets.
Crayola Crayons made their first box of crayons in 1902 and introduced them in 1903. The only colors they had back then were black, brown, blue, red, violet, orange, yellow and green. By 1905 their line expanded and offered 18 different sizes of crayon boxes and more colors. They now have over 150 colors and offer more products like markers, colored pencils, paints, silly putty, activity sets, play dough and more. After a few years of this, they became one of the most recognized and respected brands in the consumer markets and shipped and sold all over the world.
Crayons are used by thousands of people each day, they are used for coloring, writing, and drawing. But who invented the crayon? Crayola brand crayons were the first kid crayon ever made. Invented by cousins Edwine Binney and Harold Smith, they sold their first box of 8 crayons in 1903 when they cost just a nickel.

Today the world is a colorful place, and Binney and Smith the producers of Crayola Crayons played a big role in that. In the late 1800’s Binney and Smith’s red pigments that is used for the color in the crayons is used to make the color in paint which is used all over. Neither Binney or Smith came up with the name “crayon”, it was Binney’s wife, Alice, who made up the name crayon. The French word for crayon is “craie” which means chalk.

On almost every school supply list you will probably find crayons, but how are they made? Crayons start with wax, so outside of the factory tanks of clear gooey wax stands waiting for color, meanwhile on the inside of the factory they are mixing the colors made from chemicals, once the color looks just right they put it in a special oven called a kiln. After a couple hours, hard chunks are removed from the kiln and grounded into a fine powder called pigments, then, it’s packed into bags and sent to the crayon factory. When it gets there they mix it with the super hot liquid wax. Every mixture must be blended over and over otherwise one crayon could come out different than another one. From there the newly colored wax is poured into molds and stirred to keep from air bubbles forming, if an air bubble gets inside a crayon it might cause it to break later on in the process.  Soon the crayon hardens and they let the crayons cool for awhile. After that they are removed from the molds. Then they are all checked for chips and dents, then a machine wraps and labels each and every one of the crayons, then they separate them and puts them into bins of the same colors, so then the sorter puts them into sets and combines them with other colors, and finally the crayons reach the packing machine and into boxes ready for you to use! When Binney and smith first tried making crayons they made them extremely toxic for children but after they tried new mixtures they eventually perfected the mixture and it was soon safe for children.

Now when you pick your favorite color out of a crayon box you will think of the long process it took to make it and how popular they have become.
